Better xCloud Controller Setup Guide

A controller can be paired correctly and still fail inside a cloud session. Check the operating system, browser or app, Better xCloud input mode and the game in that order.

01

Connect the controller before opening the stream

Pair a Bluetooth controller or connect a USB controller at the operating-system level first. Test it in another application so you know the device, cable, battery and pairing mode are healthy. Then open Better xCloud and Xbox Cloud Gaming with the controller already connected.

If you connect or wake the controller after the stream starts, the browser or app may need a reload before the game receives it. This is especially common when a virtual controller, remapper or second physical controller is already present.

  • Use a data-capable USB cable when testing wired mode.
  • Remove duplicate Bluetooth pairings when the controller connects to the wrong device.
  • Check the browser's gamepad permission or site behavior on PC.
  • Test one physical controller before adding a virtual device or second player.

Why Better xCloud cannot see a controller

The OS cannot see it

Fix pairing, cable, battery or driver issues first. Better xCloud cannot receive an input device the operating system does not expose.

The browser cannot see it

Reload the page with the controller connected, check browser permissions and avoid a second tab holding the device focus.

A virtual device is active

Temporarily disable remappers and virtual controllers. Duplicate devices can change which controller index the game receives.

The game ignores it

The game may require a specific input mode or may not support the controller layout you are using. Compare another title.

04

Controller setup for local co-op

For two-player local co-op, establish one working controller session first. Add the second controller only after the first player can launch, move and pause the game. Then verify which device Better xCloud or the browser assigns to each player.

Better xCloud controller setup guide: troubleshooting checklist

When a Better xCloud controller problem appears, write down exactly where the input stops. If the operating system cannot see the controller, the fix is pairing, cable, battery, driver or permission work. If the operating system sees it but the browser or app does not, the next layer is focus, gamepad access or a stale client session. If the cloud game sees the device but buttons are wrong, the likely issue is mapping or the game's supported layout.

This order prevents a common mistake: changing several Better xCloud settings before proving that the controller is available to the client. Close duplicate cloud-gaming tabs, disable remappers for the first test and reload with one physical controller connected. Once the basic path works, add virtual devices or a second controller one at a time.

  • Confirm the controller appears in the operating system's own input test.
  • Reload the cloud gaming page after pairing or reconnecting a controller.
  • Keep one physical controller active while diagnosing the first player.
  • Check browser focus and permissions before changing server or video settings.
  • Record the button mapping that works before adding a remapper or virtual device.
07

Separate input routing from game support

A working controller does not prove that every game supports the same input route. Some titles expect an Xbox-style layout, some expose local co-op only after a second player joins, and some browser or mobile paths expose fewer input events than a desktop client. Test a known controller-friendly game or menu first, then compare the target game without changing the rest of the setup.

If a controller works in menus but not in gameplay, check the game's own control settings and whether the session has assigned the device to Player 1. If it works for one account or browser profile but not another, compare permissions, extensions and active virtual devices. A short written test matrix is usually faster than reinstalling the client repeatedly.

Input works everywhere

Keep the current controller route and investigate the target game's control mapping or local co-op rules.

Input works outside the browser

Check focus, browser permissions, tab state and whether another application has claimed the device.

Input is duplicated

Disable remappers and virtual devices, then reconnect one physical controller before testing again.

FAQ

Better xCloud controller FAQ

Why can Android see my controller but Better xCloud cannot?

The app may need to be restarted with the controller connected, or the game may use a different mapping. Test the pairing, app focus and game support in order.

Why does my controller work in another browser tab but not Xbox Cloud Gaming?

Focus, browser permissions, page state or a second virtual device may be interfering. Reload the cloud gaming tab with one controller connected.

Can I connect two controllers to Better xCloud?

Some local co-op scenarios support two players, but device assignment and game compatibility matter. Follow the local co-op guide.

Should I use a virtual controller with a physical controller?

Only when the game or input setup needs it. During troubleshooting, disable the virtual device so you can isolate the physical controller path.

Why does the controller disconnect during a session?

Check battery, Bluetooth interference, USB cable stability, power management and whether the device is being claimed by another application.

Does Better xCloud support every Xbox controller?

Support depends on the operating system, browser/app and controller mode. Test the device at the OS level and review the current upstream notes for platform-specific behavior.

Why does Better xCloud show the wrong controller as Player 1?

The browser or app may assign devices by connection order, and a virtual controller can take the first index. Disconnect duplicates, connect the intended Player 1 device first and reload the session.

Should I change Better xCloud settings when the controller fails?

Usually no. First prove the operating-system, browser or app and game input paths. Video settings cannot repair a controller that the client never receives.

What evidence helps with a Better xCloud controller report?

Include the platform, controller connection type, browser or app, game, whether the OS detects it and the exact point where input stops. Mention virtual devices or remappers as well.

Why does reconnecting the controller fix the problem temporarily?

The client may have opened before the device was available or another application may have claimed focus. Reconnect before launch and reload the cloud session with one controller active.
